The Latest Facebook Changes

Facebook is at it again.  Last month, we told you about the switch to Facebook graph search, and what it could mean for businesses.  This month, Facebook is slowly bringing about changes to personal pages’ timelines, which could in the future also affect the timelines of brand pages as well.

Some of the changes that have been made with the new timeline include:

  • Profile picture placement: While the profile picture had previously overlapped slightly with the cover photo, it now overlaps further.  The user’s name also now overlays the cover photo.  For fans of photoshop, this could lead to some fun photo design choices to better incorporate the profile picture and name.
  • Tabs: Tab engagement has already decreased since the timeline redesign, and may decrease further as tabs in the personal pages’ no longer feature a photo, and are instead only tiny icons.
  • Order of Items: On the right side of the timeline, users can now choose the order that maps, friends and photos are shown.  This feature is not usually emphasized on brand pages, so may not have a huge effect on brand pages in the future.
  • Fans, Friends, and Followers:  The terminology of “subscribers” has now been changed to “followers” on personal pages - it is possible that brand pages’ “fans” may also become “followers” in the future.  While this may not have a large effect on the page itself, it might change the verbiage brands use when promoting their pages in the future.
It is hard for many people to keep up with the changes that Facebook seems to bring about almost constantly.  If you are interested in learning more about Facebook or other social media marketing channels, and how they might be utilized for your company, contact the professionals at Sales & Marketing Technologies today.
