How to Understand Your Social Media Audience

One of the most important parts of crafting a workable social media strategy is understanding your audience.  Unless you are providing your social media followers with information that is useful and relevant for them, they will not be engaged with your social media accounts.  So how can you better understand your social media audience?  There are a couple questions you can ask yourself when considering your targets.

You should focus on the details and demographics of your audience. 


Where do they live and work?  What do they do for fun – for example, what are their hobbies, where do they like to do, what websites do they frequent?  What type of tone do they most often use – professional or casual?  By understanding these things, you’ll have a better feel of who your target customer is.

After their demographics, you need to understand their problems. 


What is causing them pain?  How badly would they need it?  And what can your product or service do to help mitigate or minimize this pain?  Some things you may want to focus on are whether your product or service can make them have a better day, set their minds at ease, help them keep their job, improve their career opportunities, or even live a longer life.

Look at your product or service’s position in the market. 


Consider your direct competition, as well as any alternatives someone may pick instead of your product, or do-it-yourself options your patrons may consider.
